We are happy to announce that our CEO Max Limper has just been awarded with the first prize at the Hugo Geiger Prize 2018! This most prestigious award for outstanding PhD theses at the Fraunhofer society has just been given to Max in recognition of his thesis entitled “Automatic Optimization of 3D Mesh Data for Real-Time Online Presentation”. During Max’ time at Fraunhofer, his work has resulted in the first versions of our RapidCompact software (although, back then, it was still called InstantUV).
The Hugo Geiger Prize, worth 5,000€ for the first place, is donated by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy. It was therefore formally handed over to Max by Bavarian state minister Hubert Aiwanger during the annual Fraunhofer Netzwert Event on Tuesday evening. The prize is named after former Bavarian Secretary of State Hugo Geiger, who was the patron of the inaugural assembly of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft on March 26, 1949.

We present RapidCompact 1.5, coming with several notable improvements.
For mesh simplification, we have added an optional mode that guarantees the preservation of the input topology, triangle flip prevention and other quality improvements. In the texturing pipeline, we significantly reduced the number of output charts. Apart from this, PLY loading and OBJ writing in the CLI are now again faster than before, and we have performed smaller improvements and bugfixes in different areas, including texture baking, UV overlap handling and normal creation for non-manifolds.
You can find the new version and the full changelog in the downloads area.
We are proud and happy to announce that the Khronos® Group has just welcomed DGG as a new Associate Member. As a spinoff of the Fraunhofer Society, DGG embraces innovation as well as standardization efforts, which has made us a strong supporter of Khronos’ glTF™ format, from our very beginning. We also hope to be able to contribute to Khronos’ standardization efforts, as our team has already done it in the past.
We are proud and happy to announce the first official release of RapidCompact.
RapidCompact is our improved and rebranded version of the Fraunhofer software InstantUV, and we have decided to keep a continuity in the version numbers to preserve, to the possible extent, backwards compatibility of the solution within existing users’ ecosystems. Compared to InstantUV 1.3.2, RapidCompact 1.4 brings significant improvements regarding speed of the simplification, and improved texture baking functionality for baking of PBR maps and all kinds of generic textures (such as glossiness, specular, F0, cavity, etc.).
We are happy about our new logo, which has been professionally designed by La Mina GmbH, Darmstadt.
It emphasizes the three letters of our name – DGG – and allows to combine them well with a tagline that summarizes our main mission: Making 3D accessible. In addition, a polygon look (to be precise: a triangle mesh) is combined with a fresh set of colors. Hope you like it as much as we do!
Our team from DGG just won two prizes at the Darmstadt Startup & Innovation Day 2018, showing our RapidCompact 3D data optimization solution. We are very happy about the audience award for the “Best One-Minute-Pitch”, which was determined during a live voting in the amazing Darmstadtium convention, by almost a thousand visitors. DGG also made the third place in the startup competition, having competed with over 90 other proposals.
We are deeply thankful to the audience and jury for giving us these awards, as well as to the gold sponsors Siemens and Deutsche Bank for donating the prize money.
